Privacy at a glance

Time On Water is designed to process marine and location data on your device. It does not require a Time On Water account and the launch version does not use third-party advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs.

Session recordings remain under your control on your device unless you choose to export or share them. Time On Water does not operate a cloud service that receives your recorded tracks or marine data.

Information the app handles

Device location and movement

With your permission, the app uses location information to display and record position, speed over ground and course over ground. Location may continue while the app is in the background or the device is locked only during a Session that you have explicitly started. Background location stops when that Session stops.

Marine instrument data

When you connect compatible equipment, the app receives marine data made available by that equipment or gateway. Depending on the boat, this may include navigation, heading, speed, wind, depth, performance and other instrument information. The app may also store connection settings needed to reconnect to equipment on a local network.

Sessions and imported files

A Session can contain timestamps, location and movement data, raw marine events, connection context, performance settings and a summary of the recording. Imported Session packages are copied into the app’s managed storage and retain information required to identify their origin and capabilities.

Subscription information

Purchases are processed by Apple. Time On Water may receive product, transaction and entitlement information needed to unlock and restore subscription features. Time On Water does not receive or store your payment-card details. Apple handles purchase information under Apple’s own privacy policy.

How information is used

The app uses this information only to:

• display live device and marine instrument information;
• calculate requested navigation and sailing-performance values;
• record, index, display and replay Sessions;
• save your connections, dashboards and app configuration;
• import or export Session files when you choose to do so; and
• verify and restore App Store subscription access.

Time On Water does not sell personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or use it to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

Storage, backup and sharing

App settings and Sessions are stored locally in the app’s container on your device. Sessions are treated as user-created documents and may be included in your normal device or iCloud backup according to your Apple settings. Backup is provided and controlled by Apple; it is not a Time On Water synchronisation service.

Information leaves the app when you deliberately export or share a Session, when Apple processes subscription information, or when your device backup service backs up app data. Anyone who receives an exported Session may be able to view its location track and recorded boat data, so review the recipient before sharing it.

Retention, deletion and permissions

Sessions remain on your device until you delete them or remove the app. Deleting a Session removes the app’s managed copy from the device, but copies you exported and copies retained in a device backup are controlled separately. Apple’s backup-retention rules and your backup settings apply to those copies.

You can revoke location access at any time in iOS or iPadOS Settings. Doing so prevents features that require location from working. You can stop an active Session in the app to immediately end the app’s background-location use.

Website and service providers

The Time On Water website does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Like most hosted websites, its infrastructure provider may process standard technical request information—such as IP address, browser type, requested page and time—for delivery, security and operational logging. That processing is governed by the provider’s own terms and privacy practices.

Apple provides App Store distribution, subscription processing and, where enabled by you, device backup. These services may process data in countries outside Australia under Apple’s terms and privacy practices.

Security and limitations

Reasonable steps are taken to minimise collection and protect the information handled by the app. No device, network, file format or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure. You are responsible for controlling access to your device, local marine network, backups and exported Session files.

Because the launch version stores Sessions locally and does not use a Time On Water account, Luke Matthews generally cannot retrieve or delete information held only on your device or in your Apple backup.

This page may be updated when the app, website or legal requirements change. The effective date above will be revised when a material change is published. If a future feature uploads Sessions, provides accounts or introduces analytics, this policy will be updated before that feature is released.
